At the end of each Grand Canyon rafting season, the GCW warehouse crew and guides work diligently on what we call “Fall Work”. While we make repairs and fix things throughout the season as necessary, the major overhaul of equipment happens in October after all the rafts are off the Colorado River. Many Grand Canyon Whitewater guides stick around Flagstaff and our warehouse after their river seasons to help out with Fall Work before heading off for their winter jobs or adventures.
There is lots of work to be done and many helping hands. Fall Work includes cleaning out the food room, re-stenciling ammo cans, boxes and groovers, patching rubber rafts, inspecting life jackets, re-finishing wooden oars, re-filling first aid kits, and grinding off old paint and applying a shiny new coat to every single raft in the fleet.
The crew was very proud to get their rafts all painted yesterday (photo below) and will work to roll up all the rubber for safe storage during the winter.
