The sun, sand, water, and dry Arizona air in the Grand Canyon can take a toll on the skin. Some travelers may benefit from bringing light gloves to use throughout the trip. Gloves are not required, but here are some situations you’ll encounter while on the river where you may wear gloves.
Sun Protection
We recommend covering up. A sun shirt, light pants, a hat, and a sarong. These items protect your skin from the sun and dramatically limit the amount of sunscreen you need and the hassle of remembering to reapply. When dressed for the full sun, only the face, tops of feet, and hands are exposed to the punishing UV rays. The more days you’re in the canyon, the more the elements affect your skin. Wearing a lightweight sun glove provides good coverage.
Abrasion Protection
Some of the daily activities include participating in the duffle line, holding onto boat straps while riding rapids, scrambling on rocks when hiking, and setting up and breaking down your camp. These tasks can be harsh on the hands.
Gloves are small and “handy” to bring on the trip. Many guests travel without them, but they’re easy enough to add to your bag if you’d like. We recommend fingerless, quick-dry gloves. Look for a glove similar to this one. Consider your personal needs and bring items that will be most useful and enjoyable on your next Grand Canyon rafting adventure!
