The hikes we do into the side canyons of Grand Canyon are probably one of my most favorite aspects of a Grand Canyon Whitewater rafting trip. I would always highly encourage rafters to train and prepare for your Grand Canyon trip ahead of time so you are physically able to go on many of the side hikes that are offered to you along the Colorado River. Often, the hikes aren't all that long but, given the environment and geography, they can be challenging because they are uphill and over rocky terrain.
You'll hear many Grand Canyon river guides describe hikes as "scrambly." What this means is that the trail isn't perfectly defined and manicured. You'll have to be able to move your bod to get yourself up and over some rocks or other obstacles. The guides do their best to describe hikes in detail before setting out for the adventure so you'll know what's coming and what shoes to wear, how much water to bring, etc.
That being said, side canyon hikes are always OPTIONAL. You are never required to do any of the hikes. If you are feeling like you would rather just sit, grab a book or drink a beer, the guides will work to accommodate you. SO…. listen to your bod and listen to your guides. If you are exhausted or just needing a little R&R, know it is totally OK to just sit a hike out and enjoy yourself like these folks hanging out at the base of Deer Creek Falls …
