Arizona rafting is a wonderful experience and the dry desert air makes heat much more bearable. However, one thing to note is that with that dry air, you’ll need to keep hydrated and MOISTURIZE throughout your Grand Canyon expedition. You’ll want to bring a big bottle of lotion (in addition to sunscreen) to put on each evening in camp – a trial size won’t cut it. Imagine how much lotion you would use if you fully slathered your body once or twice a day and bring that amount.
If you are from a dry climate and your skin is used to it, then about 8-12 oz. will probably do you fine for about a week rafting the Colorado River. If your skin is not used to dry climates, bring more than that and consider bringing really good, heavy-duty, extra moisturizing lotion or cream. And on that note, bring more sunscreen than you think you would need too.
Many of the Grand Canyon Whitewater river guides love salves or body butters. One of the most popular salves among river guides is Super Salve, which can be purchased at a local Flagstaff trading company, Winter Sun. Super Salve can be used all over your body, as chapstick and on little cuts and scrapes to help heal them. It is INCREDIBLE stuff.
