Many of the rafts for Grand Canyon Whitewater are inflatable. That is very common in the Grand Canyon. They are well suited for adventure. Grand Canyon Whitewater rafts are custom made for this purpose.

A raft typically consists of an inflatable portion along with a rigid frame. Some rafts are powered by a motor and some are oar-powered. Oar-powered means your guide sits in the middle of the rig with 2 oars. You enjoy the ride from the front or back section of the raft. Your guide maneuvers the boat and your job is to hold on (and scream with delight). On a motor rig, typically the motor is mounted on the back section of the raft. The guide maneuvers from there and you have lots of room forward to enjoy the ride.
It’s important for you to know that inflatable rafts are sectioned. They are NOT one, huge balloon waiting to pop and blow backwards across the water. No, no, no. Not to worry! There are multiple, separate and independent sections that make up one raft. If one section leaks, it does not affect the whole boat…only that particular section.
Also good to know….is that the crew carries a pump to freshen up any saggy section. Different conditions call for different air pressure in the raft’s tubes (just like car tires).
Now you know. Grand Canyon Whitewater inflatable rafts are custom made to withstand the rigors of the biggest whitewater in the northern hemisphere and still be comfortable for your travel. In this case….inflation is good!
