Dramatic acting, Disney special effects and some high-quality green screening circa 1960 come together to make the “Ten Who Dared,” a funny re-creation of John Wesley Powell’s 1869 epic journey into the unknown. For the last few Friday lunch hours, our office has been gathering around to watch Disney’s chronicles of Major John Wesley Powell’s first descent of the Colorado River through Grand Canyon. While I wouldn’t recommend running out to buy the movie, it’s kinda fun to watch if you’ve got the time.
More recently, the BBC and another Grand Canyon river outfitter produced an even more realistic and dramatic re-creation of Powell’s journey. If you can find that version, “Operation Grand Canyon with Dan Snow,” it’s well worth your time. Fun to get an idea of what you’ll encounter on your Grand Canyon raft trip, hopefully with a little less disaster and better food!
