THE TRIP
“Every passenger I ever had was nice people. And I’ve found that the more well-traveled and successful folks are, the easier they are to deal with. The biggest pleasure I get is seeing people react to the river. They start out tight as a drum; they’re stuck, can’t do anything about it and it’s too late to back out. Then on the third day of the rafting trip they relax, slip off their shoes and dangle their bare feet in the water, and you begin to see a new person created. It’s really marvelous. Then you watch them tighten up again as the run nears the end and they steel themselves to plunge back into civilization. That’s heartbreaking.”
