We often hear, “Am I too old for a river trip?” The truth is, no, you’re not. In fact, we have more 62-year-olds than any other age. Our trips are designed to be inclusive, making sure that everyone can enjoy the adventure. Sure, we have families with kids, solo travelers in their 30s, etc. But the most common age group is 60+.
1. “I’m too old; I can’t keep up.”
It can be normal to worry about not keeping up with a group, but our trips are tailored to accommodate all activity levels. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, you can sit by the river and enjoy a good book while others hike. There’s no pressure to participate in every activity.
2. “My adult children are worried about me going on this trip.”
You might be surprised at what you’re capable of. These trips are backcountry expeditions, but we take care of the hard stuff. We supply all of the equipment, the food, the tables, the chairs, the cots… Our guides are there to help and give detailed orientations on how all the equipment works, including whitewater safety and tips on camping outside. We also have ways to communicate with the outside world if, in the rare instance, there is an on-river emergency.
3. “I won’t be able to do the bag line or help set up camp.”
While the guides need the majority of the group to help unload the rafts, if you have a back injury and can’t lift heavy things, don’t worry. The rest of the passengers help with unloading the rafts. If that would drive you crazy (watching other people help when you can’t), the guides always appreciate an extra set of hands in the dishline!
4. “What if I need assistance?”
Bring along a friend or family member who can help you! Our guides are always willing to help, but having someone in your corner is the best. Having a companion can make the experience even more enjoyable (for them, too!).
5. “I’m not sure I can handle paddling”
Here’s the easiest one—we don’t have paddle trips! Our most popular trips are with our motor boats, so no paddling is required. You sit back, relax, and take in the breathtaking scenery. Our oar trips are a little more physically challenging, but still, the guides are the ones on the oars, rowing that 225 miles.
Preparing for Your Trip
My father-in-law went from the couch to his first river trip. The truth is, he regretted that. The first thing he said when he got back was, “I wish I had trained more.” That’s why we created a simple training program that helps prepare people for the physical requirements of a Grand Canyon rafting trip. Just being in the Canyon is physically demanding: walking in sand, carrying bags, sleeping outside—all things we don’t normally do on a regular basis.
This program will help you build the strength and endurance you need to make the most of your time on the river.
Real Stories from Our Guests
Many of our older guests have had life-changing experiences on our river trips. Here are a few stories:
– “The highlight for us was we had a chance to visit with our kids and grandkids where all of us were unplugged! Plus we didn’t have to make decisions and argue about meals, activities etc. We could just enjoy our surroundings and soak in the beauty of the canyon. It was very special”. -Mary Sue K., 74, California
– “Loved the passion the guides have for caring about the canyon, enthusiasm and care for the passengers, no matter their age.” -Mary S., 72, North Carolina
– “This was the experience of a lifetime for me. Even at the age of 67, I loved the cliff jump into the water. Swimming under the waterfalls, sleeping under the stars, being pummeled by the water in the rapids. It was all sensational!” -Colleen D., 67, Washington
– “We had a fantastic group of 28 friends that went on this trip, ages from 20-something to 67+. We all had a great time together and our guides took care of our every needs and made the trip super fun.” -Rick Z. 67, California
